What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns, commonly referred to as "caps," are often used to strengthen teeth that have been weakened by decay. A dental crown may also used to secure dental bridges.
A significant portion of the natural tooth structure must first be reduced in order to prepare the tooth for the dental crown; therefore, crowns are not considered a reversible procedure. What is a dental bridge?
Bridges are dental appliances used to replace missing teeth. Dental bridges made of porcelain are the most aesthetically pleasing, as they blend well with the texture and color of natural teeth. When executed by a skilled dentist such as Dr. Holmes, a dental bridge is difficult to distinguish from natural teeth.
A traditional dental bridge offered at our Charlotte area practice consists of a replacement tooth fixed between two dental crowns. The procedure begins with the removal of some of the tooth structure of the natural teeth adjacent to the gap to allow for the thickness of the crowns. The dentist will then make an impression of the area to send to a lab.
