Dental Implants

What is a dental implant restoration?

Restorative Dentistry PatientA dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically implanted into the jawbone by a skilled surgeon. Dental implants function much like a natural tooth root. Once our Charlotte area dentist, Dr. Holmes, has placed your new dental implant and it has fully healed and integrated into the jawbone, the professional staff at Indian Trail Dental Associates will perform the restoration part of the procedure.

The type of technique used to seal your dental implant will determine what the first stage of your restoration procedure will be. If the gums cover the dental implant, Dr. Holmes, will need to surgically expose the dental implant. If a healing cap was placed in the dental implant, Dr. Holmes will remove it and screw an abutment into the dental implant. Once this initial procedure is complete, your new implant crown or bridge will be permanently cemented onto the abutment. Dental implants are a healthy alternative to dentures. They protect bone structure, feel safe and secure, like natural teeth, and help preserve surrounding healthy teeth.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

If you are missing teeth, have a healthy jawbone and oral tissue and fully understand the implant dentistry procedure, you may be a good candidate for dental implants, available at our Charlotte area practice. Contact Indian Trail Dental Associates today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Holmes.

Endodontic Treatment (Root Canals) - Rooting Out The Myth.

What is endodontics?

Contrary to popular belief, endodontic treatment (root canal therapy) is not a scary procedure at all. In fact, root canal therapy is a restorative dentistry procedure offered at our Charlotte area practice that has saved many teeth destined for certain extraction. Root canal therapy is necessary when the pulp inside the canal becomes infected. Root canal therapy is a complex procedure and requires the expertise and skill of a seasoned dentist. Dr. Holmes has a great deal of experience in completing successful root canal treatments.

Dr. Holmes will first numb your mouth to make certain that you are comfortable and relaxed. The tooth is then isolated and an opening is made to reach the dental pulp. The pulp is then extracted using stainless steel files. The root canals are then shaped, sculpted, and cleaned to ensure all of the pulp has been removed. They are then dried using paper cones and filled with a special substance called Gutta-percha. Once the Gutta-percha is cemented into the canal, the tooth will need to be restored using a crown or other dental restoration.

Root canal treatment is more than 90 percent effective and the entire procedure can be completed in one to two visits.

Am I a good candidate for root canal therapy?

If you have infected tooth pulp, you are a candidate for root canal treatment.
